Join Vera Mironova, a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University, for a discussion of her book From Freedom Fighters to Jihadists, which examines the internal organization of armed groups and, in particular, their human resources. Why have three groups – Jabhat al-Nusra, Ahrar al Sham, and the Islamic State
in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – prospered over the course of the Syrian conflict while others have faded away? What is it about their organizational structure and their Islamist ideology that helped groups manage their fighters so successfully? Dr. Mironova’s unparalleled access, gained from a year embedded with Iraqi Special Operations Forces, will guide this discussion and answer some pressing questions that persist in the region since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011.
