Civic Life Community Seminars

The Civic Life Community Seminar Program is part of AU’s The Civic Life Initative. The program offers all members of the AU community—faculty, staff, students, and alumni—the opportunity to practice the skills of productive disagreement. Each seminar will be devoted to a question about which members of our community disagree and will take the form of a conversation. Each seminar will be led by a faculty Civic Life Fellow and a team of student Civic Life Fellows and is capped at 12 participants. Each seminar will last for one class period (1 hour and 15 minutes). A Community Seminar is not a free-for-all; the Civic Life Fellows will articulate the ground rules for a productive conversation at the beginning of each session.

The goal of these seminars is not to seek agreement or have a debate. Rather, in these seminars we seek to do justice to the question at hand and to give participants the opportunity to practice the skills and character traits of productive disagreement

If you should sign up for a Community Seminar, you should know that:

  • We want to hear what you think and why.
  • You will likely be in conversation with colleagues who have different perspectives than you do.
