The United States Constitution describes, on paper, the framework of a liberal democracy—a system based on free and fair elections, the rule of law, individual rights, and independent courts. Donald Trump’s presidency has highlighted challenges to some of the constitutional system’s most central assumptions. In a time of asymmetric polarization, are the framers’ assumptions about and aspirations for the U.S. Constitution still justified? Join Mieke Eoyang, Vice President for Third Way's National Security Program, as she moderates a discussion with panelists Carrie Cordero, Liza Goitein, and SPA Assistant Professor of Government Chris Edelson, on the question of whether the Constitution failed during the recent impeachment proceedings or at some other juncture, and what that means for American democracy.
